Steve Reich - Piano Phase
1 musician, 2 pianos
This and so much of Reich’s other work sounds like how my brain works.
I hated guys like this in school, but I’m always in the mood for some Reich.
What I’m listening to: Nico Muhly - Mothertongue. I think you’ll like the track ‘The Only Tune’
The state of music.
I wrote this on my “real” blog. I figured I’d share it here for anyone interested.
This is a great post. I’ve had this discussion with fellow musicians both classically trained and not. There were other people doing what Beethoven and Mozart were doing in their time, but no, not anywhere near as well and there is a reason you don’t know those names. It will be interesting to look back on this time period 100 years from now when someone asks who were the great rock stars? Who were the great composers and writers?
As for the search for music, it has never been easier to find music, but because of that, it makes it harder to find quality music. You have to ignore what you’re hearing in the foreground and dig for the music that is playing in the background. I’m a big fan of algorithms, and I’ve probably read some of the same things you’ve read and as fancy as that sounds, I still believe in the passion and the soul behind a music. You can find mathematical reasons why Bach and Beethoven were successful and you can study the exact patterns that were used and why. However, I’ve tried replicating it and it doesn’t quite sound that good. There are the other algorithms that say if “you like this, you should like that”. I would guarantee that many people that use Pandora or Last.fm don’t really know what they like. They just know that they “love music” and “can’t live without it”. They listen to it because they think it’s filling some cultural hole in their lives.
The genius is out there and if they work hard enough at their craft and you work hard enough to find them and support them, then it works out in the end. But if neither parties care enough, the genius will never be heard.
Sony to buy Bertelsmann out of Sony BMG
Sony has confirmed today that it is to acquire Bertelsmann’s 50% stake in Sony BMG, allowing the German media giant to re-position itself as “a licensing and management platform for exploiting and marketing music rights under the BMG brand”.
- me: so maybe i'm a "fourth date" kind of girl
- boutofcontext: but you live in a one-date kind of city
I have decided to take the bus all the way home today. This could be a dumb idea, but what the heck.
Update: It wasn’t so bad, only about 15 minutes longer than my subway trip. However, I did forget that I easily get car sick. The constant stopping had my stomach doing flips.
getting sleepy
I just doubled up on my doseage of B-12. That’s 6000mcg or 100,000% daily value. Hopefully this will get me through the next 2 hours.
If you don’t go to this…(you’re just not cool enough)
Just great. Right when I tell myself that I can’t spend money… just freakin’ great.
